Course overview

Facilitating Change in Coastal Science and Policy is a skills-based course in effective leadership and communication, with a focus on engaging with the world outside of academia. Communication training includes identifying audiences and objectives (public, philanthropy, policymakers, managers, scientist practitioners) and leveraging non-traditional communication platforms. Engagement training involves identifying opportunities in the policy or management landscapes, as well as practicing tools for participation and facilitation of interdisciplinary groups. This class is all about practicing skills, so the class sessions are designed for active participation! Enrollment is open to ALL UCSC graduate programs. Enrollment by application only and restricted to senior graduate students. Enrollment limited to sixteen due to the interactive nature of the class.

Participants should be senior graduate students, who are at a stage in their graduate career to communicate results with non-academic audiences. Students in previous cohorts represent a diversity of disciplines spanning the natural and social sciences.
